Orion partnered with the National Weather Service to establish the Office of Water Prediction (OWP), create its public-facing web presence, and support communication of next-generation water prediction capabilities.
The Office of Water Prediction was established as a geographically distributed organization, with staff in Maryland, Minnesota, and Alabama, to advance a unified national hydrologic program through research, development, operational support, and scientific collaboration. As part of this initiative, Orion designed and developed the organization's website, created its visual identity, and pioneered the first interactive web-based display of National Water Model (NWM) data, providing users with intuitive access to advanced hydrologic forecast information.
Project Impact
Orion played a foundational role in establishing the Office of Water Prediction’s digital presence during the organization’s formative years. By combining modern web design with advanced geospatial visualization, Orion helped transform complex hydrologic model output into accessible, interactive information for forecasters, researchers, decision-makers, and the public.
Developing the first interactive National Water Model web display marked a significant advance in communicating national-scale hydrologic forecasts. The platform showed how intuitive web technologies could deliver advanced environmental modeling, increasing awareness of water conditions and reinforcing NOAA’s commitment to science-based decision support for flood forecasting and water resource management.
