Description:

The National Weather Service Inundation Mapping Interface is a web-based tool that is integrated into the AHPS (Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service) Web-suite and provides flood inundation maps that show the extent of flooding expected spatially over a given area. This is a GIS project that ONS developed for the NWS Office of Hydrologic Developement in conjunction with the Office of Climate Water and Weather Services. ONS has developed 21 sites to date with over 3000+ planned sites to completed in the next few years as this is also becoming a national level project.

Project: NWS - IFLOWS (Integrated Flood Observing and Warning System) OCWWS
Location: National Weather Service Headquarters Silver Springs, MD
Description:

ONS has been managing all aspects (data flow, web presentation of data) of the IFLOWS system for the past 6 years. IFLOWS, (the Federal Integrated Flood Observing and Warning System) is a cooperative venture between the National Weather Service (NWS) and seven flood-prone Appalachian states (KY, NC, NY, PA, TN, VA, and WV). IFLOWS' purpose is to reduce the annual loss of life from flash floods, reduce property damage, and reduce disruption of commerce and human activities. To accomplish these goals IFLOWS uses communications technology and software to collect real time sensor data from remote locations, and disseminate the data among government organizations responsible for public safety. This program is expanding to a national level with the introduction of AFWS.

Its purpose is to both alleviate the burden of climate information management for people that require climate information to make management decisions and the manipulate data for basic and applied research. ACIS brings historical climate information and near real-time data together under one umbrella system where they are fused into quality products to assess historical climate trends, enhance daily operational decisions, or assist with any number of climate dependent activities.
